Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common, long term condition characterised by a number of symptoms which occur around the digestive system and can develop at any age. It can cause bouts of stomach cramps, constipation/ diarrhoea, bloating, spasms, wind, dizziness, nausea, tiredness, headaches, sudden urgent need for the toilet and feeling of partial evacuation.
It is a lifelong condition but symptoms vary between individuals and come and go. They can disappear for months or years.
IBS is a physical condition but is often associated with emotional issues as well.
People who suffer from IBS usually find that stress/ anxiety cause a flare up of symptoms. People diagnosed with IBS may cope less well with stressful situations increasing the likelihood of them reporting high levels of stress.
The symptoms of IBS in themselves may cause the sufferer stress/ anxiety.
There is no cure for IBS but symptoms can be managed. If you learn to relax and respond more creatively to stress you may have fewer and less severe IBS attacks.
Gut related hypnosis aims to help you do this. It uses relaxation, visualisation and hypnosis to teach you relaxation and pain control techniques, reduce stress and put you in control of your symptoms.
Hypnotherapy is effective in reducing IBS symptoms and improving quality of life for 70 – 80 % of sufferers in this group according to Dr Whorwell of the University of South Manchester (UK).
Around 4 to 6 sessions of treatment is all most people need.
You will need a formal diagnosis of IBS from a medical professional before starting a course of treatment.
You must also be willing to listen to audios regularly and spend some time at home using self hypnosis and related techniques.
Make the rest of your life the best of your life.
